Mr. Style Mr. Fashion

Heyyyy so this week we're reviewing something that only JUST came out and that a whole lot of people are talking about...SNSD's Mr. Mr.! It was published on February 28th, 2014 and had 2,057,554 views by the next day. Wow!

Time to make an appointment...
Em: There was a lot going on in this video, and a lot of it was quite cool when you break it down. The main idea was surgeon-inspired outfits in hot pink paired with striking black and white dance outfits. Its nice to see a change from the usual red/black/white combination we see so often, and it was VERY Girl's Generation. The pink outfits ranged from sparkly formal dresses to sleek suits, and the black and white outfits ended up being in both dresses and suits as well. While at times there was a bit too much going on, there were a lot of lovely pieces!
Lots of pink!
But paired with black and white
Ruby: Girls Generation has had more concepts than I can count. Some of them have been great, some have been awful. I will admit, when I first saw these teasers I was super worried that this mv was going to be weird and  uncomfortable. But I was so so wrong. I honestly think that the styling (hair, makeup) for this music video is the best era for SNSD I have ever seen. The pink doctor scrubs are avant garde, unique and stylish. I could have done without the first dance outfit, but I loved the take on mens wear. And I mean, those little black dresses, so old school SNSD, so wonderful.

Pretty in Pink
Do you love pink? I mean REALLY love pink? Like you go into the girl's section of the toy aisle at Target and just sigh with happiness kind of love pink? If so, then you might be experiencing something called Soshi Syndrome, the uncontrollable desire to have everything you wear be--you guessed it--PINK. But how can you pull it off? Is it appropriate? Well I'm here to tell you that it is ALWAYS appropriate, and SNSD can show you how!

Got an important meeting at work? Pair a bright pink polka dot blazer with a red turtleneck, eye-catching red earrings, and a super sparkly necklace. Your fabulousness will blind everyone and they won't even be able to think straight, let along contradict you.

Got a date and want to make a big impression? Own it with a short sequined that shows off your legs and makes you just as eye-catching as a particularly fancy chandelier.

Got a job as a surgeon? Don't let that stop you from letting your fabulousness show through! Simply throw your surgeon's garb into the wash with a red shirt and it'll have just the right amount of personality. If you've got a date later, throw on some gorgeous makeup too. If your hair ends up getting frizzy while you're working away, tie it back for a more elegant look.

Soshi Sochi

Olympics in the Soshi world don't involve luge, skiing or even figure skating. No. The Soshi Olympics award their highest honor, the pink medal, for super amazing hair. What else?

Let's break it down by sport:

Curvaceous Curls
This pink medal definitely goes out to Taeyeon for her bouncy big 80s hair. We love the big, textured hair and it certainly leaves an impression.

Bangin' Bangs
Tiffany takes this one with her edgy straight bangs, but Sooyoung is a close runner up with her divided bangs and modern pumped up half-pony.

Princess Pony Tail
Tied for this honor are Yoona and Sunny. Both so voluminous. Both so edgy. Both so fabulous.

Blonde Bombshell
Hyoyeon is the ultimate blonde beauty in this video with a great example of a soft feminine blond hair-do.

Close runner up for the pink metal is Seohyun with her ombre half pony. Soft and feminine made edgy by the color change, very nice.

Sexy Waves
Yuri totally takes this medal with her ultra sexy, ultra soft pin up waves.

Jessica also sported some luscious, bold waves.

#girlslikeboys

#houndstooth again actually; the pattern keeps recurring this season, from nails to shirts, and we talked about it in our review a couple weeks ago of BAP's 1004(Angel). It continue the trend from Spica's You Don't Love Me.

#sprinkleof glitter for the profusion of prominent pretties (read: jewelry) that everyone seems to be having these days. We've seen a lot of elaborate earrings and statement necklaces, from Rumble Fish's The Virulent Song to Rainbow Blaxx's Cha Cha (both of which we recently reviewed).
Pretty organic earrings

#girlslikeboys can be a real cool look. 2ne1 uses dance outfits that are both straight up men's wear and also dresses with men's wear collars. Recently we've seen this in Pika-Burnjuck by GPBasic, which featured military uniforms, and So Wonderful by Ladies' Code which featured the men's collar dresses.
Interesting that menswear is often in black and white

Their test results...
Em: I really like the combination of the suits and the pink...I like a nice mix of feminine and masculine, and I think SNSD has a very feminine image, so the all-pink ensembles worked well with that, and the contrast tied together well with it too since a lot of the pink was in the form of blazers or other business-related clothes. The surgeon theme was fun. I do think there was too much going on at times, and that I wish I had seen some of the good outfits more rather than that quantity.
Does that qualify for a surgeon's outfit?
Oh yeah
Ruby: As is so often the case, the things I really love are the details in this video. The shoes for the dance scene with the dresses were elegant and classy, featuring metal accents. Even the makeup, winged eyeliner and red lips, added so much to the visuals in this music video. It really put the girls in their best light. And I loved how different it was. The bare midriff dress was super cute, as were the dresses that featured more draping. I wish there were less outfit sets at the end of the day, but there were some really great features in this video.
not quite all business

The perfect surgical companion. Mr. Teddy.

Would you go to snsd for medical treatment? What were your thoughts on the great girl group smackdown of 2014?

1004 Styles for the Fashion-Forward

This week we reviewed enough coats to make us swoon, with BAP's 1004(Angel). It had 1,916,917 views on February 15th, 2014, plus our love!

Em: Yes, yes, 1004 times yes. This video was full of spectacular coats and dark, sexy clothing, topped off with some classy masculine jewelry. It was a mix between "I'm walking angstily around in February thinking about love" and "I'm going to a business meeting in the fashion industry" and "I'm on an adorable Carnival date." Somehow, those all worked together to create a unified band concept characterized by a mainly black and white palette with well-crafted additions of personality.
ANGST
cute carnival date, right? ignore the ominous wings
Ruby: I think that BAP's team chose a very difficult type of music video for a band this large to pull off. When you make a video with a bunch of different symbolic scenes and a plot line, it's easy for the sheer amount of outfits to become cluttered and distracting. While BAP uses a wide variety of clothing, the tonality and color choices were really what pulled this mv together. By keeping the tonality darker with small pops of color, like the purple shirt, the music video felt really cohesive. Not to mention it felt like pretty much every outfit was spot on. They all fit well and made sense but had a fashion edge.

WHAT TO WEAR

Picture this: your day starts out as a chilly Febraury (yes, it is snowing where I am) and you need a jacket to get you around. But wait, tonight you've got a Valentine's Day date. What do you wear? Well, lets take some hints from BAP!

A classic furry coat will be warm and stylish, especially with a military-inspired line of buttons bringing it all together. It's also useful for digging holes in the ground!

You'll look like this guy, I swear.
Once you get to work though, you're going to need a smooth, versatile outfit that will be adaptable to whatever your boss needs you to do. Keep it sexy yet conservative. And roll those sleeves up...you can't go wrong with forearms.
Also be sure to look like you know what you're doing.
Got a date after work? Try an eye-catching pinstriped suit, especially if your date plans to dress cute and vintage too. You'll look adorable riding around on a carnival horse or giggling through a house of mirrors.
cuties.
Just be careful though...don't get lost in the house of mirrors, and DEFINITELY don't resort to this to find your way out:
Not recommended

You think a boy bands shoes are all the same? Men's shoes are more interesting than that! BAP explores a bunch of different snazzy options ranging from the classic to the modern!

The classic oxford is always a good choice. It will never fail to look classy, put together and chic. Excellent for creeping around pseudo victorian mansion sets.

Simple black loafers can also be a great way to go. If you're wearing busy clothes and just want something simple, these are a totally great option. You can easily chase women around fun houses and walk over broken glass without a care in the world.

Want something younger and trendier? Try some lace up doc martin boots. Simple, but they'll stay on during aggressive dancing!

Still lookin'? What about some snake skin converse? They're an awesome detail piece for a simple outfit; simple and sleek. They are also great for setting the mood while running around giant corpses digging holes.

Some heavy brown work boots can totally the best choice to pull a look together. They can add a nice balance if you're wearing a bulky top or coat. They're also great for exploring abandoned carnivals.
There's even a pair of women's shoes. Sure you might break your ankle getting on or off of a carnival ride, but it sure makes hugging less awkward.

#sheerpleasure

#leatherinanyweather because is there's anything kpop is good at its putting leather into almost any outfit set. We've seen it in everything from Rumble Fish's Virulent Song to Eunhyuk and Donghae's Still You.
Leather and and the ever-present kpop wings of justice

#houndstooth for the classic pattern we keep seeing in kpop. It wasn't too bad in this MV, but it can get a little overwhelming. We saw a lot in Spica's You Don't Love Me.
At least the rest of the outfit is simple
Spica's You Don't Love Me with all-houndstooth outfits
#sheerpleasure is gaining popularity with girl groups. Sheer tops are a great way to introduce a bit of sex appeal while remaining modest. They leave just enough to the imagination to make you wonder... BAP's lady had a dress with a sheer polka dot top, Ladies' Code's So Wonderful featured a lace pattern see through dress and Rainbow Blaxx used simple see through fabric in their mv Cha Cha!

Em: All in all, this was pretty great! Granted, it didn't exactly break every rule in the fashion handbook, but that's okay. The details were lovely (I do love lovely details). From the guyliner to the jewelry, it was all well-thought-out. There was a pair of classic leather shoes in one of the shots that I want to see everywhere from now on. I know the coat and jacket-centric concepts can get overdone in kpop, but this is also men's fashion...if they have more than one interesting outfits I'm impressed. Sexy, clean, and masculine, this one wins my vote.
close-up of a decent amount of eyeliner. luckily for him its waterproof.
cool rings
Ruby: I mean there were small little things I might have changed, too much eyeliner here, not enough hair gel there, but overall this video was really a standout. Men's fashion this year has really taken classy up another notch, and this video was no exception! It kept it interesting while still maintaining a really clean-cut, masculine concept. As Em points out, its all in the detail at the end of the day. The leather pieces really brought consistency throughout the video. Even a something as small as a leather collar on a button down can really make a big difference.

isolated accessories make more of an impact and seem more masculine

The set. It was gorgeous. *dies*
