You Are What You Eat

This week we decided to review a strange but fun video with lots of VERY interesting outfits...Orange Caramel's Catallena! It was posted on March 11, 2014 and had 1,376,885 views by the 23rd. Let's get to it!
Em:
If you're looking for an imaginative video about anthropomorphic food, this is your video. Orange Caramel starts out dressed as mermaids, with shiny and slightly scaly floor-length dresses that turn into tails at the end. Why not. Then the video takes an unexpected turn--the mermaids end up flopping around in the kind of styrofoam and plastic packaging usually used to package fish in a grocery store. Meanwhile, the dancing parts of the video were performed in eye-catching polka dot ensembles. The whole video used vivid colors and bold details to really make an impression.
Sure we're totally at a beach
THEM EYELASHES
CUTE
Ruby: This video is completely crazy, and as per usual when that's the case, there's some really good crazy and some really bad crazy. Personally I love the concept of the sushi costumes. I thought they were super original, identifiable and really fun. The dance outfits were a little on the weirder side with too much going on most of the time. But even so it seemed to add to the playful chaos concept they were going for so all in all it worked out pretty well. As someone who eats quite a bit of sushi, I thought the anthropomorphized sushi were absolutely hilarious.
Another version of the adorable polka dots
At least the colors are well composed

R: Holy Headwear, Batman!
B: What is it, Robin?
R: Those girls over there...what's on their heads?
B: Robin, do not look at them. Keep very, very quiet and try not to attract attention.
R: *whispers* Who are they?
B: Those are the Sushi Sisters, also known as Orange Caramel. Villains, the lot of them.
R: What did they do?
B: They've murdered sushi chefs across the nation. Their fourth sister, Floe, was killed by bad sushi at an unknown restaurant, so they've made it their mission to avenge her death.
R: That's horrible! So...the headgear?
B: Trophies from past murders.
R: Are...are you going to try to stop them?
B: That, Robin, is why we're here this evening.

THE VICTIM
Blast from the past:
Orange Caramel is a subunit of After School, brining out the quirky, odd side of the band. After School is known for classy, sexy concepts, so this subunit has always been an out of the box group for them. When they debuted in 2010, they called this whacky style Candy Culture. So lets take a walk back through candy land, shall we?

They debuted in 2010with a video called Magic Girl, the originator of this candy style. This video features cute, fluffy dresses in pastel colors, polka dots and teeny tiny accessories. It was ultra feminine and played up their charm and cuteness.

Later in 2010, they moved onto Aing which took a turn for the weird. It's this dream like, fairy tail fantasy concept, complete with costumes like little red riding hood, alice in wonderland, snow white.... all made out of latex.

They came back with two mv's in 2011, Bangkok City and Shanghai Romance. These mvs continued to explore the ways in which things could get weird fashion wise in kpop videos. Bangkok City featured, voluminous blonde wigs and a roller disco theme. It was a lot sexier in concept than some other videos they've done. Among the truly odd, there were a few great moments.

Shanghai Romance was actually the first video I ever saw from Orange Caramel and it definitely left an impression. Shanghai Romance has pieces that really feel more mainstream kpop and some really cool pieces but all that is counterbalanced by some of the weirdest clothing/accessories I have ever seen in a kpop mv to date.

In 2012 they released Lipstick, the pingpong battle royale video. This moved back towards the candy culture look in some ways, but I think this is really when they took off towards Candy Couture. The styling was sexy and flirty while being crazy and weird. It felt like it was less cliche and really defined what I love about Orange Caramel; its pop colors, weird dances and an undeniable charm.

This mv really continues down that path of exploring a weird concept in an innovative and fashionable way. I'd definitely go back for seconds.

#lacemeup
#shinyasSHINee
#hat-titude

#lacemeup because once again, lace makes an appearance! We talked about it in Ladies Code's So Wonderful, and we'll keep talking about it, since it just keeps showing up! Lacy details seem to fit into any outfit set, adding a dash of femininity and elegance to anything. We also saw it in quite a bit in Rumble Fish's Virulent Song--for some reason that video keeps coming back.

Lace absolutely EVERYWHERE is The Virulent Song
#shinyasSHINee for the blindingly reflective outfits we've been seeing a lot of this year. From the mermaids in this MV to the extras in Royal Pirate's Drawing the Line, metallics are definitely in. While it sometimes works in a kpop mv, be careful with this one in real life...its hard to have a conversation with someone who has been blinded by your outfit.
Super reflective dress...luckily the design is kept fairly simple otherwise
a classy addition from Drawing the Line
#hat-titude you gotta have it these days. There have been a lot of head covering's recently in kpop, although most have been more traditional hats. Although hats are more commonly found in boybands fashion choices, we're seeing them more and more for women too. There was a beret in SPICA's You Don't Love Me and Girls Generation all wore fedoras in their dance scene in Mr. Mr..
is it a magic mushroom? will we ever know?
Spica looking sassy
Fedora Generation?
Em: I think I speak for both of us when I say AWESOME. They really tried to do something different here, and the effort paid off, with an eye catching set of outfits that played an integral part in the story of the MV. Talk about making the outfits the focus! Very clever, and I'm glad they went all the way with it. I love polka dots too, so seeing them as a theme made me happy, and it also brought the outfit sets together. The dance outfits made a lot more sense with the repeated pattern. Orange Caramel has done it again!
ALL the polka dots
Yum yum?
Ruby: I thought this video rode the line between crazy and fashion in a really unique way. We see a lot of girl groups these days who use the same concepts over and over again but with Orange Caramel you know that you're gonna get something really unique. The best part about it is that other than one poor choice of dance outfits, everything is flattering and sexy. These three women look amazing while breaking all the traditional guidelines for how kpop girl groups are dressed in mvs. They're also a great example of how to do the cutesy, candy girl style without looking like they were dressed like little kids, which can get creepy.
This is INDEED unique

Crayon Pop of Color

This week we did something a bit different…we’re looking at a band rather than just one MV. Since Crayon Pop came out with Lonely Christmas, we’re going to talk about both that and their previous stuff! Check out their most recent MV here:

Em: ALL THE CUTESY. Seriously. There were two main outfits in Lonely Christmas…one in which they were dressed as literal presents, and the other in which they wore blue tracksuits with odd Christmas-themed accessories. Tracksuits are somewhat of their signature look, and they tend to put them under floofy skirts. They did the same look with Bar Bar Bar AND Dancing Queen. Crayon Pop has so much cute its almost overwhelming, between their dance moves, set, and outfits.
cutest present ever
Tracksuit with helpful accessories

Ruby: So this is the first time we’ve talked about Crayon Pop. Seeing as they’ve done so well this year, it makes sense for us to try and talk about them at least once. What an interesting concept, right? I mean from the beginning CP has been a really interesting group to watch. It seems like such a one time shtick, but people have really responded to the humor element in their music, dance and perhaps especially fashion. And, I mean, I have to agree, although I do think it is getting a bit old. Those christmas tree glasses are super classy. I’ll admit, I think it works a lot better for the christmas theme than just as a general fashion statement….
I moustache you a question
Christmas tree glasses because why not really

What To Wear
Have you ever wanted to go to the gym in the evening, but you also needed an outfit for the day that would look good with your workout clothes? Crayon Pop is here to help you figure out what goes with your fabulous tracksuit pants!

The Schoolgirl Look
There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting your tracksuit pants under a schoolgirl outfit. It shows people you’re fit, like to exercise, and fashion-friendly too! Make sure to wear a color that completely clashes with the rest of the outfit, so people pay particular attention to those fabulous zigzags.
YAY JUMPING

The Rollerblader Look
If you want to be extra safe for your rollerblading later, try a cute matching skirt, colorful t-shirt, and ESPECIALLY a helmet! Your tracksuit should protect you from ouchies too.
READY FOR ANYTHING

The Bicyclist Look
If you want to go all out and show your athleticism, you can wear both halves of the tracksuit with leggings and sneakers. You’re ready for action! Don’t forget the helmet, especially if you’re going bicycling! It helps if the tracksuit is matching pastels…that way you can warn drivers to be careful, and you’ll stay safe.
SASSY POSE TIME

The Full Tracksuit
Want to show them you’re serious about this? Just wear the full tracksuit. Crayon Pop demonstrates it in Lonely Christmas, complete with long-sleeved arm stripies. And if anyone makes fun of you for getting into the Christmas spirit, show them your new present!
*cute voice* BANG

Dear Crayon Pop and All Concerned Parties,

Hello, this is Carl from the Casting Department of the Very Important Casting Company. I am pleased that I am able to write to you with exciting news! I am currently in a position to offer you a major sponsorship contract! We would like to cast you in a series of safety ads for teens and kids! What an exciting opportunity for a young band!

First we will do a bike safety video! You girls always wear helmets like they’re the best accessory ever. Especially in this video! Your helmets are all bedazzled, they’re super snazzy and I’m sure the youngin’s will want to buy those in a hurry.

Next we’ll tackle winter safety! If you live in cold places, you definitely need to cover up those hands! Gloves are an absolute must! You don’t want to lose a finger to the nasty, snowy winter. I’m glad you girls are setting such a good example. Let’s spread the word!

Not to mention those awesome sauce shoes! Heels are so unsafe, especially for young active girls! Better to stick with those safer alternatives! We will launch our own campaign for women’s shoe safety! Ugly sneakers unite!

Last but not least always remember your spare track pants or leggings. You’ll never know when its super cold, and you need to walk a long way, or when you’re going to need to hop on the back of a motorcycle, or ya know, if its just a really windy day.
aye aye captain!
bundle up for the winter kids!

#clever Christmas-related pun
#boxofcrayons
#areyoutoyingwithme

#blahblahblahChristmas ‘Tis the season to look like the season! Now is the wonderful time of year where things get cuddly and fluffy and Christmas-y, complete with the red and green pair that is really difficult to wear at any other time of the year. TIME TO BREAK OUT THE ANTLERS. Lonely Christmas has lots of random Christmas accessories, and other bands have also jumped on the bandwagon (example: EXO). There have also been winter-themed stuff, like the sweater-fest in Step by Step from ZE:A.
kpop can be kind of literal sometimes
THEYRE EVEN DRESSED AS A TREE
merry christmas to you too sir (from Step by Step)
#boxofcrayons because it seems like the stylists have a goal of combining as many colors as possible. From Magic Mint to Tickle Me Pink, fashion becomes a rainbow of happiness. I mean, the band name IS Crayon Pop after all. T-ARA just did the same thing in their retro-inspired Do You Know Me?
at least there's sort of a pink and yellow theme
what even T-ARA....
#areyoutoyingwithme…? Because it’s certainly fun. It’s not too common, but in the last year or two I can remember a few videos where toys are used as accessories. WHHAAAAT. I know it’s kinda crazy, but it’s also fun. It fits really well with the crayon pop image and the Christmas theme. Throw back to Lee Hi’s It’s Over? Anyone?

Cute headband
Lee Hi also in a cute headband in It's Over

Outro:
Em: This was cute and fun. As long as you don’t take it seriously as *dramatic voice* fashion, it’s entertaining. The floofy Christmas present skirts were adorable. At least they all looked comfy. It had their signature looks of track pants and helmets, helping establish their brand as a band. Whether that’s a good brand to have or not, that’s up to you. I can’t say I would wear any of this, but that probably wasn’t the point.
PERFECT for Christmas
I mean, this is fairly reasonable (from Bar Bar Bar)
Ruby: I mean, I was just saying that I wanted something Christmasy. Like a real heartwarming video full of seasonal cheer. I guess this works… No but seriously it is so much fun to watch them be silly and enjoy their jobs. The little wiggly stars on their helmets are too cute and the accessories like a reindeer ring just put me right into a Christmas mood. It’s not fashion forward and I wouldn’t recommend the look, but it was a lot of fun.
I'm pretty sure sunglasses make people cool
Antler ring adds pizazz to any impractical typing situation

Weird hair bunches anyone?

You keyboard very good. But where is MY  triangle key?
