Would you Stay for Tea- Hello Venus!
This super cute, super cheery song had 246,866 views as of May 14th, 2013. If you haven't seen this little ray of sunshine, watch it here: IT'S SO CUTE I WANT TO PUKE RAINBOWS.
Overall impression:
Em: The lovely thing about the fashion in this video was the
cleanness of it all. The colors were simple and bright and springy, with lots
of simple and pretty dresses and skirts. Some of the clothing was edging on
childlike (AEGYOOOO) to fit the plotline of the girls not getting kissed. There
were some bold patterns, but the simplicity of the outfits meant they still
weren’t overwhelming. The main outfit was the checkered dresses in black or
primary colors, paired with simple nude heels that didn’t distract from the
pattern.

Ruby: I agree. I love it when videos reflect the season
they’re being released in. In the mélange of videos recently that are super
sexy or more winter clothes, it’s really nice to see some fresh springy ideas
that are appropriate for work or school or family time. You can’t wear a lace
corset to your math final or your cousin’s graduation party, but anything in
this video would work in those situations.

Still from 9Muses "Wild" MV. She looks great, but Grandma might not approve... |

Maybe less sexy than others, but definitely extended family, small children and judgy teacher approved. |
Other promotional Materials:
Em: Teasers basically did screenshots from the mv, so
nothing new there. In the stages, outfits were taken directly from the mv, and
I saw the same simple patterned dress with the same heels. It gave a nice
continuity with the mv, and I think continuing the same theme made the style stronger—it
matched with the bold simplicity and didn’t complicate the style. Their actual
comeback stage had a little variation, using pastel pinks and blues for the
patterns on the dresses, but it was essentially the same.

Ruby: I liked the teasers, bright and pastel-colored and
super simple. They felt very tangible and real. There was a constant minty
green color throughout the teasers and the mv that matches the album title and
it just seems to appropriate. Spring green, a dash of pink or yellow and a cup
of tea. Feels like springtime.

another set of super wearable outfits, HELLLLLLLO venus. ;) |
Continuity:
Em: The video was really consistent in aesthetic. Though the
dresses had a little bit of color and pattern variation, all of the dance
outfits had enough in common that it looked cohesive. The outfits during the
acting scenes were a little more different, and they seemed to vary based on
person, but they still kept to the same aesthetic for the most part. There was
even more continuity for each person, since their variations on the theme all
varied in a similar way, giving them character while still making them part of
the band.

a unique look for Alice |
Ruby: The video was almost too similar. I would have
appreciated a little bit of a breakup. Like those yellow dresses. Icky. Too
similar and its starts to feel weird and overworked. Some outfits diverged a
little bit. The real magic here was found in the details, daisy buttons, nude
heels with a color stripe on the inside, a yellow bow ring. Each added a little
dab of personality and uniqueness without whacking you over the head with their
cutesy, girly-ness. Plus all of these are also great ideas for spring/summer.

Band’s Overall Image:
Em: Hello Venus uses a lot of beautiful, bright colors in
their promotions. They focus on cuteness and prettiness rather than, say,
sexiness or badassery. This promotion was fairly consistent with their previous
songs and fit nicely with their image.

Ruby: I dunno, I think there are some notable differences
between their last two promotions and their first. To be honest, when they
first debuted I was turned off by the extremely short skirts they wore. It felt
like they were using cutesy sex as their image and that weirded me out a bit.
But with this and their last promotion they really moved towards super
wearable, age appropriate clothing. It’s really nice to see a group promoting
being sexy and cute without going overboard.

now, long skirts and sweaters, still cute but now with class! |
Trends in K-POP:
Em: Pretty and aegyo have been staples of kpop for awhile,
so the basis was nothing new. Its nice to see a prettier theme now, though,
since we’ve been seeing a lot of groups that are going for a more mature look
and changing their image. Its also nice to see legitimately wearable fashion. Hello
Venus does a good job with the themes they picked.

Ruby: Rather new girl group, aegyo all the way. It’s not
surprising, but they did it well. Recently girl groups have shifted towards
super sexy or almost a harajuku level of over-accessorized aegyo. It’s nice to
see something more Secret ‘Shy Boy’ esque. Its not new, but it's a real
hallmark of the industry and I’d like to see it stick around a bit.

Conclusion:
Em: Lots of great, wearable outfits, a nice aesthetic, and a
cohesive image…good job Hello Venus. While it might not have been
groundbreaking, the overall consistency and effect of the outfit choices made
it all just generally well done. They win points. Side note…their hair works
really well. I liked the variations, it gave each member more personality, and
they were even matched with the outfits chosen. Overall, they did well!
Ruby: I do love the hair, the makeup was a little odd in
this video. (its not cute when you can count the eyelashes, ladies) I agree.
Not earth shattering fashion defying magic, but there’s something to be said
for some good wholesome kpop aegyo. And it worked. It was believable, so points
to Hello Venus for keeping it real. Before I wasn’t so keen on them, but now I
will keep my eye on Hello Venus.
Daily Dose of Daebak:
